Track 6: Family Nursing

Family nursing is a part of the primary care provided to patients of all ages, ranging from infant to geriatric health. Nurses assess the health of the entire family to identify health problems and risk factors, help develop interventions to address health concerns, and implement the interventions to improve the health of the individual and family. Family nurses often work with patients through their whole life cycle. This helps foster a strong relationship between health care provider and patient. Family nursing is not as much patient-centered care as it is centered on the care of the family unit. It also takes a team approach to health care. A family nurse performs many duties commonly performed by a physician. They have the ability to write prescriptions, and need a broader base of knowledge and skills in order to care for their patients. Nurses may work in clinics, private offices, hospitals, hospice centers, schools and homes to care for their patients

Track 14: Critical Care Nursing

Critical care nursing is a complex and challenging nurse specialty to which many registered nurses (RNs) aspire. Also known as ICU nurses, critical care nurses use their advanced skills to care for patients who are critically ill and at high risk for life-threatening health problems. Critical care nurses must be proficient in a wide variety of high-level nursing skills. They are experts at evaluating intensive care patients, administering care, recognizing complications and coordinating with other members of the critical care team. Successful critical care nurses also excel at interpersonal communication, leadership, strategic planning, critical thinking and decision-making. Critical care nurses work in emergency rooms, critical care wards, walk-in clinics, doctor offices and other healthcare settings. Because patients are treated around the clock, critical care nurses are usually required to work rotating shifts that include days, nights, weekends and holidays.

Track 15: Nursing Management

Nursing management consists of the performance of the leadership functions of governance and decision-making within organizations employing nurses. It includes processes common to all management like planning, organizing, staffing, directing and controlling. Healthcare management is a branch of healthcare services that provides leadership and guidance to organizations to enhance their growth, development and operations to ensure good administration and control over the services provided and data generated.  It includes skills like planning, organization, decision making, good governance and regular inspection of all activities of the organization. Such management positions require nurses to have training or a degree especially for healthcare management. Healthcare management professionals work as administrators, heads, executive officers, planners and more. They get along with new technologies, recent trends and use their skills to deliver the best possible care for patients and good mental and physical care to nurses as well.

Track 16: Public Health Nursing

Public health nursing is the practice of promoting and protecting the health of populations using knowledge from nursing, social, and public health sciences. Public health nursing practice focuses on population health, with the goal of promoting health, and preventing disease and disability. Public Health Nurses comprise the largest segment of the professional public health workforce and serve in many different critical roles. Public Health Nurses work with the individuals and families that compose the communities and the systems that affect the communities. They work in a variety of settings such as health departments, schools, homes, community health centers, clinics, correctional facilities, worksites, etc. The knowledge and skills of Public Health Nurses enable them to make significant contributions to public health. Their clinical knowledge and unique relationships to those they serve assist in designing and implementing programs and policies to meet the needs of vulnerable populations. The combination of a clinical nursing background with knowledge from the public health and social sciences provide a sound basis for public health leadership positions.

Track 17: School Nursing

School nurses are qualified and registered nurses or midwives many of whom have chosen to gain additional experience, training and qualifications to become specialist community public health nurses (SCPHN - SN). Their additional training in public health helps them to support children and young people in making healthy lifestyle choices, enabling them to reach their full potential and enjoy life. School nurses work across education and health, providing a link between school, home and the community. Their aim is improving the health and wellbeing of children and young people. They work with families and young people from five to nineteen and are usually linked to a school or group of schools. School nurses see all children with their parents during their first year of schooling for a health assessment, which will include a vision and hearing test. They help children and families gain additional help and support when required, and provide and coordinate additional services for vulnerable children. They also advise on common childhood conditions such as asthma, diabetes and eczema, working closely with general practitioners, health visitors and other health and social care staff. They may be based in a school, a GP surgery or a health center and may work as part of a wider team with senior school nurses, community staff nurses and nursery nurses. They may be employed by local councils, the NHS or by schools directly.

Track 18: Legal Nursing

A legal nurse consultant is an experienced professional in the nursing industry that is qualified to work as a legal consultant on medical cases. Legal Nurse consultants may be current or former practicing nurses. The main purpose of legal nurse consultants is to help law professionals understand and process legal information. They work to help bridge the gap between the fields of medicine and law. Not only are they experts in practical medicine, but they also usually have a firm grasp on the legal aspects of medicine and the healthcare industry. Legal nurse consultants work with law professionals and perform a variety of different services. They will often assist in medical malpractice cases, toxic torts, insurance fraud cases, personal injury cases, worker’s compensation cases, and criminal cases, among others. One of their main responsibilities is to help lawyers gather and study evidence. They will often obtain medical records, for instance, which they can study for any information relevant to a court case or arbitration. They may be responsible for comparing a person’s medical records to allegations and deciding whether or not a case has enough merit or evidence to justify a legal procedure. They can also examine a person’s medical charts for signs of tampering or malpractice. A person’s medical history also sometimes has merit during legal cases involving health issues.

Track 19: Women’s Health Nursing

Women’s nursing involves delivering primary health care to women from adolescence through child bearing and advanced years. In addition to well woman care, they provide normal and high-risk prenatal management, family planning, fertility, uro-gynecology and well-woman care. The wide scope of practice includes health care management, disease prevention and health promotion. They deliver comprehensive health care to women throughout the lifespan, with an emphasis on reproductive and gynecologic health needs. They assist in reproductive medicine, obstetrics nursing, pregnancy health, breast cancer care, ethical, legal and social issues and also take care of nutrition in infants. It is important to note that a women’s health nurse practitioner is different from a certified nurse-midwife (CNM). While CNMs tend to focus on childbearing, from conception to delivery, a WHNP follows the entire lifespan of women’s health and does so most often in a primary care office setting, rather than a hospital or delivery room. Further, while the two paths share some educational similarities, the specializations and post-degree steps will differ. Women’s health and specific attention to women’s needs is a growing field. A skilled women’s health nurse practitioner should be willing and able to spread her knowledge about the field through educational opportunities and thought leadership. This type of advocacy may come in the form of an academic appointment, guest lectures, or professional organization involvement.

Track 20: Dialysis Nursing

Dialysis nurses treat patients that suffer from kidney failure to help their kidneys work again. This is a small part of a larger specialty called nephrology, which involves the study of the kidneys and the care that they require. These nurses support and monitor patients undergoing dialysis treatments as administered by a physician. They may educate them on their condition, medications, and other life altering factors that may help them maintain a balance of health. Dialysis nurses are registered nurses, but some are advanced practice registered nurses, and will work within a specific medical position throughout their career. As with other forms of nursing, this position is highly rewarding to those who genuinely care for patients. In fact, dialysis nursing is even more rewarding than other specialties because dialysis saves lives on a regular basis, and dealing with patients who are under duress and facing dangerous symptoms can change a patient’s life. The most commonly performed tasks are maintaining and examining patient reports and records, monitoring patients for signs of change, administering medications, consulting with physicians and other medical personnel on a decisive plan of action, and planning and implementing patient care.

Track 21:  Gynecology and Obstetrics Nursing

Gynecology/Obstetrics Nurses care for women from puberty to menopause. They help women during pregnancy, labor and childbirth, as well as women with health issues with their reproductive system. Gynecology Nurses teach women, and teenage girls, about physical and sexual health providing information on treatments from birth control to mammograms. The role of the obstetrics nurse is critically important during the volatile months of pregnancy; they provide support to women as they transition to motherhood and experience a wide array of physical and emotional changes. These nurses working in hospital maternity wards assist in labor and delivery and provide patients with postpartum care. This includes monitoring both the mother and fetus’ vitals prior to delivery and assisting in the delivery process. These nurses serve as coaches for the mother as she enters the delivery stage of labor. A labor and delivery obstetrics nurse is also prepared to quickly assist doctors during medical emergencies. Once the baby is delivered, the nurse provides initial care for the newborn, cleansing it, weighing it, and most importantly, ensuring that it is able to breathe on its own.
